A couple of months ago I made a post on Serbian version of this blog that I cannot get in touch with one of my favorite local artists – BUG. Therefore in the original version of the post I just put a couple of photos. However, BUG soon contacted me J  In fact it is a small crew of two brothers, two great guys, guys from my neighborhood. Here is the story:

BUG stands for Belgrade Underground Geeks, and as a tag associated with some of the best stencils in town it could be seen for a couple of years already. When these guys work they care first about the quality of the final stencil, ie, the technical side. Also they care a lot to have in the right location so that it communicates with the right people, rather than to have it all over the town. that is probably the reason why BUG does not have adequate popularity since their works are not all over the city. More or less, their works could be found just in areas: Vracar and Dorcol. Not to mention that some of their works have disappeared in the mean time, as it happened to their first stencil – Marvin Gaye…

BUG usually works alone and always quietly. I am right now trying to put them in touch with another Belgrade artist – AiR, so we will see what will happen.  Among foreign artists they appreciate most works of Os Gemeos and Blu, but strictly speaking about stencil artists they love most Banksy and his work. They like about Banksy his ideas, good sense for humor and that manages to stay relevant after all these years.

BUG follow what is happening in the street art world for years already and it was just a matter of time when they will start doing their own stuff. What motivates them most the fact that with their stencils they give something new to the city, that they can share their interests and opinions with others. That is why their stencils cover everything from music, literature, sport, movies and everything else that occupies them at the moment.

That was a short story about BUG. Now that I know them a bit better and having in mind their positive energy I am sure that there will be many more texts about their work.

Belgrade Street Art Documentary: Coloring the White City

A group of young creative people coming from different European countries, and which currently works on some European projects in Belgrade, decided to make a documentary about Belgrade street art. That’s how the movie “Coloring the White City” came to reality. People who sign this documentary are: Marie-Noelle Battaglia, Angela Naranjo and Vincent Grethen. Premier screening is scheduled for September, 19 at 19h in the REX (16 Jevrejska street).

Ink is one of the newer Serbian stencil artists, though he is also a professor, skater, musician… How much energy he has can be seen from the fact that he for more than two years coming to Belgrade to do his stencils on Belgrade facades even though he lives in Kragujevac, about 150km away. His energy is enormous, as he admits he has new stencil each week.

He started working with stencils while preparing t-shirts for his band, and he wanted to check how that would look like on the wall as well. Ink plays in two bands: Incomplete and Tehnološki višak.

Unlike many other street art artists, who after some time focus on more and more technically complex stencils, Ink still enjoys working with simpler pieces – using just one color. He also occasionally likes to work with small size stencils, and one of those is actually my favorite piece from Ink: people on the stairs handrail.

Lately he started doing larger formats and with more collors and one of my favorite works is Wire (this is video how it was made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5M2sv6omyg&feature=youtu.be )

He likes using tag Ink since that was his first association on writing and drawing, and in some way it is linked with the name of his band. One of his favorite artists is C215. Here we put photos of some of his works and a few more could be found on his Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ink_stencil/

Street Dog

Street Dog is one of the newest artists on the streets of Belgrade, since he works for about a year an a half. He started doing stencils after completing the creativity workshop „Express yourself with the art“ at SKC, Belgrade. Those workshops are organized by Ana Nedeljkovic, but one of the guest lecturers was TKV and that is how Street Dog did his first stencil.

So far he did about a dozen of pieces and a couple of weeks ago he did the first piece that goes beyond stencils since he combined stencil with a mirror requesting even greater interaction with people who pass by it. He enjoys interaction with people who watch him while he works and usually he has warm reception and good feedback from them.

Unknown artists - Belgrade

Ever since I’ve started collecting photos of stencils I realized that there are plenty of great pieces which were not singed. I hoped that eventually will find out who stands behind these excellent works but since I was not successful, decided that it is best to publish them together in this post. So may be some authors will reveal the secret.

Here I also put a couple of pieces that are just messages but certainly deserve to be published.
